Hey, can I get a hit of that?
As Bro. Nathan was preaching during our Sunday service, he made a statement that I wrote down as he said it. Once I finished writing it, I sat back in my seat with an image in my mind. I'm not quite ready to share that statement just yet though.
He was preaching a message entitled Horeshoes and Hand Grenades. The text he utilized was Numbers 16:8-11 which says, "And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi: Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them? And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also? For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the Lord: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?"
The message, as the title of the sermon indicates, is that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. You can be all around and so close, but until you enter into whatever that thing is then your close just didn't count. In the passage above, we see where Moses is telling Korah that the Lord had chosen him and his brethren the Levites to bring near to Him for service in the tabernacle.
What our passage didn't speak about was the rebellion which Korah began to overthrow Moses. As a result of this rebellion, it says that the ground was opened up and swallowed up the tents of Korah and his followers. Where was the tents of Korah? Right outside the door of the tabernacle that the Lord had set him apart to serve in. He became content with being close but never entering into.
This is where the statement I wrote down comes into play. Bro. Nathan was talking about those believers that may come to church service week after week but never surrender everything to be fully in church. This may not be the statement that was made but it was what I heard: "They are just wanting a 'hit' of God to return to the world." If you know anything about drug addiction, you have seen the measures addicts will take to get that next fix. They are looking for even a little hit to take that edge off to get rid of the cravings.
As Bro. Nathan was preaching the message, I saw that world-filled "Christian" as they run to the church house to get that little hit of the good-good to just pacify the craving until the next time. They walk in, sing the songs, bow their heads to pray, sit through the message and leave when service is over having gotten just enough to quite that raging desire that is burning inside of them.
That raging desire will never be silenced until it is completely satisfied. The little fixes will never be enough. Until you lay aside the things that you have held onto from your past or those things you try to hide, all you are doing is getting that hit to tie you over. So are you just going to pacify the craving or will you fully satisfy the desire to be completely filled with Jesus?
