Intimacy is what I long for
in·ti·ma·cy
noun
close familiarity or friendship; closeness.
"the intimacy between a husband and wife"
a private cozy atmosphere.
"the room had a peaceful sense of intimacy about it"
While in worship tonight, Sis. Hargrove was leading us in a slow song. The song itself had a slowness to it that you could find yourself swaying to, almost like a slow dance. While standing there with my hands raised slightly swaying, I had a vision come to mind.
In this vision, I was transported back to my high school days of homecoming and prom. I could see all the "couples" as they swayed to the soft beat, the guys hands on the girls hips and the girl with hands on shoulders. They were arm length apart because, while they were a couple, there was no intimacy.
Then I moved on to a wedding dance, a husband and wife sharing the first dance together. This looked different than the high school dances. Arms wrapped around the waist and around the neck as the newly married couple dance.
Then one last vision was that of the same couple after they have been married for some time. The arms are still wrapped just as they were on the wedding day but now the lady has her head laid loveingly on her husband's chest and his head is bowed down to her whispering into her ear.
This didn't happen overnight. It took time. It took getting to know the other: what they liked, what they disliked, their hopes and dreams, their fears.
When we come to repentance in Jesus, we are those high schoolers. We are a "couple" going steady, but we haven't developed that intimacy yet. We stand at arms length looking at Jesus, with Him looking at us and we are trying to get to know him better.
After some time passes, we become the bride as we dance with our groom. We have nurtured the relationship from just going steady to being ready to step into the ultimate level of intimacy.
As we continue to grow and know God more and more, we move to that place of intimacy. Psalm 91:1-2 says "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge, my fortress, my God. In Him will I put my trust.' When we reach that level of dwelling in Christ, we have found intimacy. It is what I long for today.
