Food for Thought
This past Friday night, I had the privilege of going with a friend of mine and her youngsters to a youth service in Cowan, TN. We knew the young evangelist who was leading the service that evening and wanted to be there for support, along with his family. Let me just say, this young man PREACHED!
He brought a message from a passage of scripture that we are all familiar with, the feeding of the 5,000 in Matthew 14,the title, "The Revival that No One Wanted.". He shared how the disciples repeatedly tried to get Jesus to send the multitude away. They were in a desert place, meaning that there was nothing around. Think about a desert for a moment. It's dry and desolet with only scrub brush and cacti growing. There is no water or anything to offer substance. But here they were: Jesus, the twelve disciples and a mass of people that just would not stop following them.
The disciples asked to send them away. Realistically, these folks had traveled many days already from their homes without substance and the disciples wanted them to go back the way they came, hungry and empty handed. How can we buy food for them? We don't have enough money for that. Then up steps a little boy with all that he had, 2 fish and five loaves. I would liken it to 2 sardines and 5 crackers today or a lunchable. It's not going to be a five course meal but it will provide nutrients when you have nothing else.
I can see the disciples now. Even though they had already seen Jesus perform many miracles, they had to be shaking their heads in disbelief as He told them to sit them in groups to feed them. He gives thanks and begins to break the bread. Loaf after loaf, fish after fish, the food continued to come. So much so infact that there was 12 baskets full left. These people came with a spiritual need, that's why they had followed Him to the desert place. But He had to care for the physical need as well.
In churches today, we come in and so many are looking for that supernatural work of God to manifest in a service. They want to see the miracles, signs and wonders of healings and people raised from the dead. But they get so caught up in the spiritual aspect that they forget the need for the physical.
What do I mean by the physical? It's simple, we forget to eat. Scripture tells us that Jesus is the Bread of Life and those that eat if Him shall be filled. How do we eat? We have to be fed. That is through sound doctrinal Truth being taught from the Word. The Bible is called our sword. It cuts, as scripture says, to joint and marrow. That means it cuts deep. We can't hear messages that tickle our ears and is so filled with fluff and stuff and expect to grow. We will stay in that place where the disciples were content to leave the multitude, tired and hungry, being sent away empty handed. We must have the meat.
