Crisis of faith or Cry, Sis of faith?
All around us we hear that our world is in crisis mode. There's a crisis of humanity, a global health crisis, we just saw the end of coronavirus pandemic, the economic crisis, the list goes on and on. But the greatest crisis we face in the world today is a crisis of faith.
What is a crisis? Defined as a time of intense difficulty, trouble or danger; a time when a difficult or important decision must be made; the turning point of a disease when an important change takes place, indicating recovery or death. The crisis of faith we are experiencing is seeing record numbers of people walk away, sighting a change of beliefs or church hurt as their reasons. People who had been devout for years, some even serving in the ministry, now deny there is a God. They have, in a sense, died.
I can remember old songs from growing up which talked about being satisfied with Jesus and songs about your past, some almost glorifying the things you had done previously. These types of songs and mentality serve to keep you bound and feeds this crisis of faith. How can you be satisfied with Jesus when your past is hanging around, calling to you, reminding you that you are a sinner and unworthy of Jesus love? Yes, I know some will say it's His grace and mercy. But if grace and mercy were enough, would there be a crisis of faith?
My pastor preached a message Wednesday night about how the church does not hunger and thirst after God anymore. We come in content. Excuse the analogy here, but we are as happy as a fat sow in a wallow. If you don't know what that is, it's a pig rolling around in a mud hole. We are content, happy to stay in our muck and mire, with a smile on our face because it's easier than getting out of the mud. We don't want to get out of the mud and get cleaned up because then we can't cover the things which the mud hides.
Instead of a crisis of faith, we need a cry of faith! What do I mean a "cry"? There's a few definitions:1. shed tears, typically as an expression of distress, pain, or sorrow. 2. shout or scream, typically to express fear, pain or grief; say something loudly in an excited or anguished tone of voice; shout out the name of. As a noun, it is a loud inarticulate shout or scream expressing a powerful feeling or emotion.
Instead of sitting back in our crisis, we need to find out cry. It's okay to be emotional if that's what you feel, but there is a deeper cry. Find your voice. Find your hunger. Move out of your crisis of faith and into your cry of faith. There is a hunger inside of you for more that is waiting to be called out. Will you cry, Sis of faith?
