Oh taste and see
Everywhere you turn right now you are seeing reports of the revivals which are sweeping across university campuses. Beginning ten days ago at Asbury University in Kentucky, and now spreading to Lee University and Samford University as well as a few other campuses, these students have displayed a hunger which has been unseen in our modern culture.
For many of these students, they are experiencing something that they have never experienced before. They have sat in services week after week for the majority of their lives without ever feeling this way during a service. But what is it that they are feeling?
Because of the nature of work which I do, I get exposed to a lot of secular music. Eleven words of a song have taken on a whole new meaning because of this revival movement, "I never knew that I was starving till I tasted you." These students have sat in services week after week with a pre-purposed agenda: sing this song followed by this one, pray here, preacher will share a 30-45 minute message, altar call and turn the service over for the next crowd coming in 15-30 minutes later. The message they heard was full of feel good fluff that made them feel full but offered them no substance to sustain them, leaving them just as hungry as when they came in. But the hunger was never recognized until they tasted of the real meat.
Psalm 34:8 says to taste and see that the Lord is good. These students have gotten a taste of the goodness of God and realized that they were starving for what is real, what is true. I was able to experience this myself many years ago but I had no one to tell me the truth of what was going on in that moment. I pray that these students are able to truly understand the depths of God's love for them that He would visit them in this manner.
